Did you know that lipstick sales are highest during times of economic crisis? Did you know that offenders receive a harsher sentence when wearing black in court? There really is a connection between fashion and emotions. It’s not all in your head.
When I was approached at work to speak on a series on Building Your Personal Brand, I almost burst into tears…yes tears of joy that is. Here was my first opportunity to articulate all that I believe in, and feel so passionately about, in an educational format. After the crazy excitement passed and reality hit, all I could think of was how do I make this so it is remarkably valuable, educational, informative and have people talking about it for days and even years to come?
Never one to do anything halfway, I worked myself to the bone, thinking of a way I could capture my audience’s attention. My creative juices started flowing and out came my new course entitled “The Power of Fashion”. I couldn’t think of a better way to capture what fashion means to me, and how I want to use it as a tool for my followers to be their daily best. The lawyer in me was hell bent on proving that the connection between fashion and emotion is not only real, but it can be backed up by empirical evidence. There is such a thing as The Psychology of Fashion. It exists, it’s real and it’s spectacular! Thankfully there are other fashion obsessed addicts who are out to prove it as well, so this made my job a bit easier. I was able to borrow some of the findings from Karen Pine, an author of several books on the psychology of fashion, and a Professor of Fashion.
Did you know that
- People stand further away from others who are wearing dated clothes.
- People walk faster when approaching someone wearing red, than wearing blue.
- Dressing in a uniform associated with brutality unleashes aggressive behaviour.
There has been a lot of research conducted on the Psychology of Lipstick and specifically red lipstick. Red lipstick evokes feelings of confidence in women. In fact during the second World War, Elizabeth Arden created a red lipstick for the women who were serving, as a way to help them feel confidant, powerful and in control. And that’s just lipstick! Imagine what an entire OOTD can do for your self esteem?
My fashion journey began as at birth….because yes, it is part of my DNA, but the thing I love most about fashion and blogging is the impact it has on you, my followers. I see it first hand when I get messages telling me how you wore something I recommended and you managed to get yourself out of a fashion rut. I see it at work when my friends pop into my office to show me something new they purchased, and I see how they conduct themselves after they walk out my door. They are walking prouder and taller. This, more than anything is what fuels my passion for blogging.
When my presentation was over I had women I didn’t even know come up to me to me to let me know how they were inspired! Nothing could be more rewarding for me. and this is why I love blogging. I want to simply inspire you to be the best version of yourself, in every way. If fashion has the ability to make you feel more confidant, more powerful and just make your day that much better, then use it to the max. Fashion is really just one of the tools you can use for your overall well being.
So if you want to start your day off right, wear something you love. Don’t ever leave the house unless you feel great in your clothes. Also look through your closet and try to decipher what your clothes say about your current state of mind. Are your clothes too big, too little, all black or never worn? What does your closet say about you and what do you need to do about it? You closet speaks to you, listen and make the changes that make you feel your best. Most of all have fun with fashion. Life is too short not to.
